Wedding Veil Etiquette: When to Wear it, Remove it, and More

A wedding veil is more than just a beautiful accessory—wearing a wedding veil is, to many brides, a timeless tradition that has symbolized purity, elegance, and romance for centuries. However, knowing when to wear it, when to remove it, and how to style it properly can be tricky. If you're unsure about wedding veil etiquette, I've got you covered! Here’s a guide to help you gracefully incorporate this stunning piece into your big day.

When to Wear Your Wedding Veil

Traditionally, the wedding veil is worn during the ceremony as a symbol of modesty and reverence. Many brides choose to put on their veil just before walking down the aisle, especially if it is a drop veil or it features a blusher that covers their face. However, you can also wear your veil for pre-ceremony photos to capture its beauty in portraits.

Should You Wear your Wedding Veil for the First Look?

The answer to this question is, "It's totally up to you!" If you’re planning a first look with your partner before the ceremony, consider whether you want to include your wedding veil in that moment. Some brides opt to wear it for a dramatic reveal, while others prefer to keep their veil a surprise for the walk down the aisle.

When to Remove Your Wedding Veil

Your wedding veil is a stunning addition to your bridal look, but there are moments when you may want to remove it for comfort and practicality.

  • After your Photos are Taken after the Ceremony: Many brides choose to remove their veil after all of the family photos are taken just after the ceremony, especially if it’s long and could get in the way during the reception. Some brides, however, want to wear their veil into the reception for the first time they are introduced as a married couple. This leads us to the next optimal time to remove your wedding veil.

  • Before the First Dance: If you want to move freely and dance comfortably, removing your veil before the first dance is a good idea. If you're doing a choreographed first dance, it may be wise to remove your wedding veil prior to that dance. No one wants a torn veil and your guests truly don't want to see you and your new partner get tangled up in your veil!

  • During the Reception: If you love the look of your veil but don’t want it to be a hassle, consider switching to a shorter veil or decorative hairpiece for the reception. Mini veils, party bows, and flower crowns are often worn by brides who don't want to go without something on their head at the reception. If this is you, I will be glad to create something fun for your reception look.

How to Properly Remove Your Wedding Veil

Taking off your wedding veil without disrupting your hairstyle is key. Have your hairstylist or a trusted bridesmaid practice removing it beforehand to ensure a smooth transition. Gently pull out the bobby pins that secured your wedding veil's comb using both hands, holding the comb in place while you do so. Then, remove the comb carefully, avoiding tugging at your hair.

Other Etiquette Tips

  • Respect Religious and Cultural Traditions: If your ceremony follows specific religious customs, be sure to wear your veil accordingly.

  • Communicate with Your Photographer: Let your photographer know when you’ll be securing your wedding veil, wearing your wedding veil and removing your wedding veil to capture the perfect moments. The mom's love a good snapshot of them placing that veil in your hair!

Your wedding veil is a gorgeous statement piece that adds magic to your bridal look. By following these etiquette tips, you can ensure that it enhances your wedding day without causing any stress. No matter how you choose to wear it, your veil will be a cherished part of your celebration!
